Amethyst was as expensive as ruby and emerald until the 19th century, when large deposits were discovered in Brazil. It was believed to prevent intoxication – amethystos means “not drunk” in ancient Greek. Today, amethyst, as the most valuable variety of quartz, is in demand both in designer products and mass-market jewelry, and its violet and pastel shades retain a wide consumer appeal.
