Alexandrite is a rare variety of the mineral chrysoberyl with a color change (reverse). Its peculiarity is strong pleochroism: in daylight the colors vary from dark blue to grassy and emerald green, but in artificial light the mineral becomes purple-red, purple, ruby-red and even crimson. The most common examples of palette changes are: from green to purple-pink, gray-purple or purple-scarlet; from yellow-green to brownish-purple; from blue-green to purple.
