Tanzanite, found in only one place on Earth, is a relatively recent discovery. Tiffany & Co named this blue-purple variety of zoisite after Tanzania, where it was first discovered in 1967. Because the crystals have different colors depending on the direction of gaze, cutters can create stones with colors ranging from violet-blue to bluish-purple depending on how much weight they want to retain from the raw material.
